Whilst this high power presents you with a more detailed image, it does come at a cost in that you are presented with a narrower field of view. However at over 70m wide when measured at a distance 1000 meters away, the view on these is not bad considering the high power, but even so, these binoculars will perform best when used in open spaces and over longer distances.
The level of optics and coatings used on these binoculars is impressive, however, the high magnification in combination with the relatively small 40mm objective lenses results in a relatively small 2.9mm exit pupil. This small shaft of light exiting the binocular means they are best used in reasonably good conditions when the amount of available light is not a limiting factor.
The 13mm of eye relief is more than enough for most users to attain the full field of view, however, for those who wear eyeglasses this may be a little on the short side and could result in dark rings forming on the edges of the view.
About Fujinon Techno-Stabi Binoculars
Made in Japan, Techno-Stabi series offers a very good price to performance ratio for those wanting or indeed needing a pair of image stabilization binoculars. Containing two different models, you have a choice between a 12× or more powerful 14× magnification. Of the two models, the 14×40 Techno-Stabi is of a slightly higher specification as it uses better quality optical components and a slightly more powerful image stabilizer. Depending on your exact requirements, both of these binoculars offer a good solution for use in a wide range of areas that include marine, astronomy, security, military, search and rescue be that from land, the sea or the air.
Important Features
As you increase the power on any binocular, the amount the image shake caused by the small movement of your hands also gets magnified. This image shake adds to eye strain as well as reducing the amount of detail you can view on the image. A tripod can solve this problem, but for those needing a more portable device or for those using their binoculars on an unstable platform like a boat or helicopter, image stabilization is certainly the way to go.
The 12×32 Techno-Stabi offers ±3° of all-direction motion compensation, whilst you get an even more impressive ±5° of stabilization with the 14×40 model.
Both models have a protective rubber housing that also provides additional grip, which can be especially useful in wet conditions. The 14×40 Techno-Stabi is fully O-ring sealed and thus is fully waterproof, it has also been filled with dry nitrogen gas to prevent the internal lenses from fogging.
The 12×32 Techno-Stabi has a centrally located focus wheel, whilst it is positioned on the right side of the instrument on the 14×40 model.
Both Techno-Stabi Binoculars can be powered using standard „AA“ batteries and there is also the option to connect the 14×40 Techno-Stabi to a DC power source. Whilst battery life is said to be between six and twelve hours, both models also feature an automatic shutdown feature that helps prolong this as it ensures power is only used when needed.
Optical Properties
Whilst both Techno-Stabi binoculars have a fully multi-coated optical system, the 14×40 model incorporates Fujinon’s high-end EBC coating that enables an even higher light transmission for a brighter and higher quality view.
The 14×40 Techno-Stabi also has phase correction coatings added to the roof prisms. This prevents the individual wavelengths from stepping out of phase with each other as they pass through the prism and thus produces a higher resolution image.
Twist-up eyecups allow for a more precise level of eye-relief and thus ensure that you are able to obtain the full field of view without black rings forming on the edges.
Accessories
Fujinon supplies their 12×32 Techno-Stabi series of binoculars with a soft carry case, neck and hand strap and a cleaning cloth is also included.
The 14×40 model is supplied with a military specification hard case that includes foam cutouts for maximum protection. You also get a flotation strap that prevents it from sinking should you accidentally drop it overboard when around water.
Optional accessories include the Stabiscope DC regulator pack for use without batteries, haze eyepiece filters, and polarizing filters.
